Why Are Additional Share Payments Considered a Sell Operation?
In the stock market, a rights offering refers to a process where a listed company issues new shares to its existing shareholders at a certain ratio to increase its registered capital. The payment for these additional shares, known as the rights offering payment, is made by shareholders in accordance with the offering ratio within a prescribed time frame to purchase the newly issued shares. However, many investors are puzzled about the operation of rights offering payments: why are they considered a sell operation?
The Association Between Rights Offering Payments and Sell Operations
The reason why rights offering payments are considered a sell operation is primarily due to the increase in the number of shares held by investors after making the payment. This increase is not achieved by purchasing additional stocks but through the "dilution" of their holdings. In other words, after making the rights offering payment, the proportion of shares held by investors in the company's total share capital will decrease, which is similar to the effect of selling stocks resulting in a lower holding ratio.
Risks and Benefits of Rights Offering Payments
While rights offering payments can increase the number of shares held by investors, they also carry certain risks. Firstly, the increase in the company's total share capital after the rights offering may lead to a decrease in earnings per share, thereby affecting investors' returns. Secondly, if the market performance after the rights offering is poor, investors may face losses on their investments. However, if the market performs well after the rights offering, investors can achieve higher returns.
