During the Anti-Japanese War, many Chinese students chose to study abroad. This was a remarkable phenomenon that not only demonstrated their desire for education but also showed their concern for the future of their motherland. So, how many students actually chose this path of studying abroad?
According to statistics, approximately 20,000 students opted to study abroad during the Anti-Japanese War. Although this number may not seem particularly large, considering the circumstances of that time, it was indeed quite challenging. The difficulties caused by the war such as transportation problems, financial burdens, and language barriers made it relatively rare for students to study abroad. Nevertheless, despite these challenges, these students firmly chose to leave their homeland and seek better educational opportunities.
Among these students, some were sent abroad by the government. China dispatched a group of students to countries such as the United States, the United Kingdom, and the Soviet Union to receive higher education. They were part of the Chinese Students' Service Corps and aimed to contribute significantly to their country in the future. During their studies abroad, they worked hard to gain knowledge and accumulate experience, preparing themselves for the construction of a new China upon their return.
Another group of students studied abroad at their own expense. These students often came from affluent families or had support from relatives and friends. Unafraid of difficulties and challenges, they were willing to strive for higher education. They chose to leave home and venture into unfamiliar environments to study and live, hoping to change their own destinies through studying abroad and make contributions to their country.
However, not all the students who aspired to study abroad during the war were able to fulfill their plans. Due to the destruction caused by the war and various challenges, some students had to return to their home country prematurely or seek education elsewhere. Although they were unable to complete their original study abroad plans, their pursuit of knowledge and love for their country never wavered.
The experience of studying abroad during the Anti-Japanese War was a valuable opportunity for the students at that time. They not only became exposed to advanced educational concepts and knowledge systems but also made many international friends, broadening their horizons and ways of thinking. These experiences played a positive role in their growth and development, laying a solid foundation for their future careers.
