为什么从本质上欧元不是货币

Why the Euro Is Not a Currency in Essence

The euro, as the core outcome of the European Monetary Union, has become a common medium of exchange for many European countries since its inception. However, despite its widespread acceptance and use in daily economic activities, the euro is not truly a currency in essence.

Firstly, it is essential to clarify the basic definition of currency. Currency is a commodity widely accepted as a medium of exchange, possessing fundamental functions such as a measure of value, a means of circulation, a store of value, and a means of payment. While the euro appears to fulfill these functions superficially, it lacks the support of an independent economic entity behind it.

The euro is issued and managed by the European Central Bank, which is not a true national central bank but a union of multiple national central banks. This means that the euro lacks independent monetary and fiscal policies, and its issuance and management are constrained by the political and economic interests of participating countries.

Furthermore, the stability of the euro is also questionable. The stability of a currency depends on its underlying economic fundamentals and political stability. However, the economic development levels and political environments of European countries vary significantly, making it difficult for the euro to maintain long-term stability. Once a member country experiences an economic or political crisis, the stability of the euro will be impacted.

Therefore, in essence, the euro is more like a political tool than a true currency. It is a product of the European integration process, aimed at promoting economic cooperation and integration among European countries. Although the euro has played an important role in promoting European integration, we cannot ignore its inherent defects as a currency.
