In China, the fire service is primarily composed of public security fire fighting forces, supplemented by full-time and volunteer fire brigades. Despite this structure meeting certain fire protection needs, discussions on why Chinese firefighters have not fully professionalized persist.
On one hand, some people believe that the current conscription system leads to frequent personnel turnover in the fire service as firefighters choose to retire after their service ends. This fluidity can pose problems such as a lack of sufficient firefighting experience among newly recruited firefighters, potentially increasing their safety risks when executing tasks.
On the other hand, there are also views that although professionalization has been successful in some countries, due to factors such as financial pressure, fire infrastructure, and fire service management in our country, achieving full professionalization for firefighters is not easy. This requires significant investment and deep reforms to the existing fire protection system.
Furthermore, we need to consider that while professionalization can bring certain stability and improved professionalism, it may also weaken firefighters' deep sense of dedication and selfless spirit towards the country and people. This is an important aspect that cannot be ignored when discussing the issue of firefighter professionalization.
