What is a Rights Offering?
A rights offering refers to a financing activity where a listed company, after obtaining the necessary approval, allocates newly issued shares to its existing shareholders based on their holding ratios. This allows the company to raise funds by increasing its share capital to support expansion, debt repayment, new investments, or other capital operations.
During a rights offering, the company issues new shares to existing shareholders in proportion to their current holdings. This means that if a shareholder owns 1% of the company's shares, they will be entitled to 1% of the newly issued shares when the rights offering takes place.
For shareholders, a rights offering presents both opportunities and risks. The opportunity lies in the potential for higher returns if the company's future performance and market value increase, as the shareholder will hold an increased number of shares. However, the risk is that if the company's performance is poor or the market environment changes, the rights offering could result in the shareholder's holding ratio being diluted, affecting their investment returns.
