The term "off-balance-sheet foreign exchange" refers to the foreign exchange holdings of financial institutions required to exchange foreign exchange with the central bank due to corporate foreign exchange sales, as well as the foreign exchange positions held by banks due to their foreign exchange sales business. It is an important indicator to measure a country's foreign exchange reserves and also an important indicator to reflect a country's economic strength.
The increase and decrease of off-balance-sheet foreign exchange can reflect the strength of a country's economy. When the off-balance-sheet foreign exchange increases, it indicates that the country's economic strength is increasing, its foreign exchange reserves are increasing, and its currency exchange rate is relatively stable; when the off-balance-sheet foreign exchange decreases, it indicates that the country's economic strength is decreasing, its foreign exchange reserves are decreasing, and its currency exchange rate is relatively unstable.
The change of off-balance-sheet foreign exchange will also be affected by the international political and economic environment. For example, when a country experiences events such as war, political unrest, economic crisis, etc., the off-balance-sheet foreign exchange of this country may decrease significantly, because these events may cause investors to lose confidence in the economic and political prospects of this country, thereby withdrawing funds from this country.
