The Bearish Side in Futures Markets: The Selling Force

In futures markets, the bearish side refers to investors who hold short positions, expecting that the price of the futures contract will decline at a future point in time. By selling futures contracts, which oblige them to deliver a specific quantity of a commodity or asset at a pre-agreed price on a specified date in the future, the bearish side expresses their bearish view in the market.

The presence of the bearish side in futures markets is crucial for market balance and liquidity. Together with the bulls (i.e., investors who expect prices to rise), they form the buyer and seller sides of the market. When bullish forces are strong, pushing prices up, the bearish side acts as a balancing force, slowing down the pace of price increases by selling contracts. Vice versa, when bearish forces are strong and prices are pushed down, the bulls provide the balancing effect.

The bearish side in futures markets typically consists of entities that have large inventories or expect future supply to increase. They aim to lock in future prices by selling futures contracts, thus hedging against potential losses from a price decline. At the same time, some speculators also join the bearish side, expecting the market to experience oversupply conditions and seeking to profit from selling futures contracts.
