What is a Right Shoulder Formation?
The right shoulder formation, also known as the "right shoulder top" or "right shoulder peak," is a common chart pattern observed in financial markets such as stocks and futures. This formation typically appears at the end of a long-term uptrend, indicating a potential reversal in price action.
The right shoulder formation consists of three main parts: the left shoulder, the head, and the right shoulder. The left shoulder and the head form a distinct uptrend, followed by a price pullback that creates the head. Subsequently, prices rise again but fail to surpass the previous high of the head, forming a lower right shoulder than the left shoulder.
Upon completion of the right shoulder formation, prices typically break below the neckline (a horizontal line connecting the left shoulder and the head), serving as a strong sell signal. This suggests that the market may have lost its upward momentum, and investors should be cautious of a possible downtrend.
It's important to note, however, that the right shoulder formation is not an absolutely reliable technical analysis indicator. In practical trading, investors should combine it with other technical indicators and market information to make more accurate decisions.
